Why are we called Chicks for Children?
While small in stature and few in numbers, a collective effort by a few children made a mighty difference.
After hearing the story about Helen, an orphan from the Kipsongo slum in Kitale, Kenya, an elementary class in Conway, Arkansas exclaimed empathically, “We must do something!”
They decided to sponsor a “chicken dance marathon” to raise funds for the kids from the slum. The kids raised $6,000 for a chicken coop and egg laying chickens to create a sustainable business to support the Seeds Children’s Home. The kids shared their vision with children attending the other eight elementary schools. During a six-year period, Conway kids raised $60,000 to help support the orphans and vulnerable children from Kipsongo who were now living at the Seeds Children’s Home.
Their Chicken Dance Marathon introduced the idea to call our nonprofit Chicks for Children. We have grown a lot since then, but our mission is still the same: to build and sustain a capacity to reduce and eliminate poverty among orphans and vulnerable children.
